Picture this: sparkling waters, a bright blue sky, and a gentle breeze guiding your ship. These are the ideal conditions for summer cruising.

However, beneath the allure of the open sea lies a hidden danger, the sun’s UV rays. When you’re on the water, the sun’s reflection can amplify these rays by up to 20%, increasing your risk of sunburn.

Whether you’re cruising through the Caribbean’s turquoise waters, exploring Europe’s historical sites, hopping the Hawaiian islands, or marvelling at Alaska’s stunning landscapes, one essential item must be on your packing list, sunscreen.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen for Your Cruise

When selecting a sun cream for your cruise, consider the UV index of your destination. Many popular cruise destinations have high UV index ratings, making sun protection crucial.

  1. Understanding SPF: The number next to “SPF” on a sunscreen bottle indicates how much longer your skin will take to burn compared to unprotected skin. For instance, SPF 15 means your skin takes 15 times longer to burn, while SPF 100 means it takes 100 times longer.
  2. Water-Resistant Sunscreen: For cruising, opt for a water-resistant sunscreen, which stays effective on wet skin for 40 to 80 minutes longer than non-water-resistant options. This feature is ideal for both onboard activities and shore excursions. Look for sunscreens labelled “sport” for extra assurance.
  3. Biodegradable Sunscreen: If your cruise includes snorkelling or swimming near coral reefs, choose a biodegradable sun cream. Many conventional sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, chemicals that harm marine life. Mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are safer alternatives that protect both your skin and the environment.

Additional Sun Protection Tips

While sun cream is vital, it’s just one part of a comprehensive sun protection plan. Here are more tips to ensure you stay safe under the sun:

  • Seek Shade: During peak sunlight hours, typically midday, seek shade to reduce UV exposure. If no natural shade is available, use hats or caps to protect your head.
  •  Apply High SPF Sunscreen: When at sea, don’t skimp on protection – SPF 50 or higher is recommended. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading out and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Protect Sensitive Skin: If you have pale or untanned skin, take extra precautions. If your skin feels warm or overheated, it’s time to cover up with UV-protective clothing.
  • Don’t Forget Lip Protection: The lips are particularly vulnerable to sunburn. Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent sunburn and excessive drying. This is especially important if you’re prone to cold sores, as sun exposure can trigger outbreaks.
  • Have After-Sun Care Ready: Even with the best precautions, sunburn can happen. Keep a cooling after-sun lotion in your onboard first-aid kit. Protect sunburned areas from further sun exposure until they heal.
  • Beware of Hidden UV Rays: Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate the cloud cover. Always apply sun-tan lotion, regardless of the weather, to avoid an unexpected sunburn.

A cruise is an incredible way to experience the beauty of the world’s oceans, but it’s crucial to protect yourself from the sun’s powerful rays. By choosing the right sun-tan lotion, wearing UV-protective clothing, and following these sun safety tips, you can enjoy your ocean adventure while keeping your skin healthy and safe.
