We’ve always had a soft spot for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Whether it’s the small ship atmosphere, the friendly crew or the handcrafted itineraries; they have a way of making you feel right at home, even in the middle of the ocean. And now, newly refurbished Balmoral will be offering new and enhanced onboard experiences after a stunning, multi-million-pound dry dock transformation.
The Refurbishment Rundown
Balmoral, the smallest ship in Fred. Olsen’s fleet and a firm favourite among loyal cruisers, docked at A&P Falmouth on 1st December 2024 for a two-week intensive programme of maintenance and upgrades. Over 700 people, including 350 crew members and 30 apprentices, worked tirelessly to breathe new life into this beloved ship. And they’ve delivered something truly special.
On-Board Upgrades
Inside, Balmoral has had a serious glow-up. The Neptune Lounge, a favourite spot for entertainment, received a technical refurbishment to enhance its facilities. Several cabins and bathrooms have been refreshed, ensuring a more comfortable stay for guests. But the real showstopper? The transformation of the buffet venue.
The former Palms Café has been completely reimagined as the Thistle Restaurant. With a sleek new layout, upgraded seating, and modern buffet and drinks stations, the Thistle is now a more inviting space to enjoy your meals at sea. It’s the largest internal refurbishment Balmoral has seen during this dry dock, and the results are nothing short of spectacular.
Staying Connected and Sailing Smoothly
For those who like to stay plugged in, Balmoral’s WiFi capabilities have been upgraded to make it easier to share those holiday snaps or video call loved ones back home. Externally, the ship underwent an ultra-high-pressure water blast to clean the underwater hull and was treated with silicone paint to improve fuel efficiency. The ship also received new propellers and bow thrusters, enhancing its performance and sustainability.
A UK Success Story
Dry docks aren’t just about sprucing up the ship—they’re a crucial part of maritime maintenance, required at least twice every five years. By choosing A&P Falmouth for Balmoral’s latest refit, Fred. Olsen is continuing its commitment to supporting UK shipyards, local economies, and workforce development. As Samantha Stimpson, CEO of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, puts it:
“This has been an incredibly successful dry dock programme… These improvements will allow us to sail more efficiently and sustainably, whilst continuing to offer a comfortable and enjoyable experience on board.”
A sentiment echoed by David McGinley, CEO of APCL Group, who highlighted the partnership’s contribution to the UK economy and its positive impact on apprentices gaining valuable industry experience.
Balmoral’s refurbishment isn’t just about keeping her ship-shape—it’s about enhancing the guest experience while embracing sustainable practices. Whether you’re dreaming of the Northern Lights, the sunny Canaries, or the lush rainforests of the Caribbean, Balmoral is ready to take you there in style and comfort. With Fred. Olsen, it’s not just about the destination; it’s the journey that makes it unforgettable.
