Last week, our content executive, Orla, had the opportunity to step aboard Cunard’s iconic Queen Mary 2 as she docked in Liverpool for the evening. Known as one of the grandest ocean liners in the world. Queen Mary 2 offers a blend of timeless elegance and affordable luxury that only Cunard can deliver. While her time on board was short, it was filled with memorable experiences. Indulging in Cunard’s famous champagne afternoon tea, and being mesmerised by a live performance in the Royal Court Theatre.

This visit gave me a glimpse of what anyone can expect when they choose to sail with Cunard. A voyage filled with luxury, comfort, and world-class entertainment.

Champagne Afternoon Tea

One of the first highlights of my visit was indulging in Cunard’s famed Champagne Afternoon Tea. A tradition that perfectly captures the essence of British elegance. Served in the stunning

champagne bar, I was greeted by an atmosphere of timeless sophistication. Where elegant decor and framed historical photographs set the mood. A harpist played soothing melodies in the background, adding to the refined ambiance. While traditionally a pianist or harpist accompanies this experience. It’s clear that Cunard leaves no stone unturned in making this moment feel special.

The selection of sandwiches was fresh and delicious. My personal favourite being the simple yet classic egg mayo in a brioche bun. The attention to detail was astounding. From the freshly made scones to the homemade cakes, each bite bursting with flavour. One little touch that stood out to me was the golden Cunard biscuit. A charming nod to the ship’s legacy and a perfect representation of the little luxuries you’ll find throughout your journey.

Of course, no afternoon tea would be complete without a fine selection of teas. Cunard serves only the best – Twinings’ tea leaves, carefully timed by the waiters to ensure each cup was brewed to perfection. And let’s not forget the Laurent-Perrier Champagne, a welcome addition for those opting for the champagne tea upgrade. Priced at $40 per person, it’s an experience well worth it. But do remember to make a reservation 24 hours in advance. Whether you opt for the traditional or champagne tea, rest assured, the impeccable service will leave you feeling pampered. As the wait staff gracefully lay napkins on your lap and discreetly top up your drinks whenever they notice your glass is nearing empty.

If you’re vegetarian or gluten-free, you needn’t worry. Cunard has everyone covered with their customisable options, ensuring no one misses out on this classic British tradition. Afternoon tea on the Queen Mary 2 is served between 3:30 and 4:30, a perfect break in the day to relax, indulge, and soak in the luxury around you.

An Evening of World-Class Entertainment at the Royal Court Theatre

After my delightful tea experience, the evening took an exciting turn as I made my way to the Royal Court Theatre. A grand venue, adorned with plush seating and an atmosphere reminiscent of a West End theatre. Another hallmark of Cunard’s dedication to elegance. Able to bring your drinks into the performance, you can sit back and enjoy live entertainment with a cocktail in hand, making for a truly luxurious evening.

On this particular night, the theatre played host to E. Sarah Carter, a world-renowned fiddler who has toured with the iconic Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance” and the hit show “Spirit of the Dance” for six years. Known for her ability to captivate audiences in stadiums around the world, E. Sarah Carter now brings her incredible talent to the high seas. Her performance was lively, engaging, and filled with a range of music, from foot-stomping Celtic tunes to surprising renditions of Queen classics.

One of the highlights of her show was when she invited an American man on stage, and in a gravity-defying act, she played her fiddle while hanging upside down, a testament to her skill and showmanship. It’s one thing to listen to music, it’s another to witness such raw talent in a setting that makes you feel as though you’re in the heart of London’s West End. This level of entertainment is not a one-off. It’s what you can expect from the Royal Court Theatre on any Cunard ship. From full-scale West End productions to live music and special guest speakers, there is always something exciting happening here.

Queen Mary 2

Queen Mary 2 is no ordinary cruise ship. She is the flagship of Cunard and a marvel of engineering and luxury, designed to cross the Atlantic in style. While the theatre and the afternoon tea are memorable experiences, what truly sets this ship apart is the sense of grandeur that permeates every corner. One of the stan

dout features for me was the ship’s planetarium. A unique offering on the open ocean. Imagine sailing under the stars, only to head indoors and gaze up at the night sky, brought to life with crystal-clear projections. It’s a magical experience, offering a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation.

Whether you are an avid traveller or someone seeking a luxurious escape, Queen Mary 2 offers an experience unlike any other. The service is impeccable, the food is world-class, and the entertainment rivals that of any top city venue. From the stunning art deco interiors to the subtle touches of elegance throughout the ship. Queen Mary 2 embodies luxury in every sense of the word.

What to Expect When You Sail on Queen Mary 2

If my brief time on board is anything to go by, you can expect to be utterly pampered when you sail on Queen Mary 2. From the exquisite dining options to the carefully curated entertainment, Cunard goes above and beyond to ensure your experience is unforgettable. Here’s what you can look forward to:
