Planning a cruise with P&O Cruises? Whether you’re a first timer or a seasoned traveller, here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions to make your experience smooth and enjoyable.
1. What is the minimum age for travel?
Guests under the age of 18 must travel with a parent or a companion aged 18 or over. Infants under six months old are not allowed on any P&O cruise. Additionally, certain exotic fly cruises and remote itineraries require infants to be at least 12 months old, due to the nature of the routes and the number of consecutive sea days.
Children under 16 are not permitted to stay in a cabin without a guest aged 16 or older and must always travel with a parent or companion who is at least 18. For adult-only ships like Arcadia and Aurora, all guests must be 18 or older. P&O defines infants as those aged 6 to 23 months, children as 2 to 17 years old, and adults as 18 and above.
2. Do I need vaccinations?
Vaccination requirements depend on the destinations included in your cruise itinerary and may change over time. It’s recommended that you consult your medical practitioner or a travel health clinic at least six weeks before your cruise. They can advise on any necessary vaccinations or health precautions tailored to your travel plans.
3. Will I need travel insurance?
Yes, comprehensive cruise travel insurance is mandatory for all UK guests travelling with P&O Cruises. This ensures that you are covered for any unforeseen circumstances and can fully relax during your holiday. Having the right insurance gives you peace of mind that you’re protected throughout your journey.
4. What are the benefits of booking a suite?
Booking a suite with P&O Cruises offers an exceptional experience, complete with extra space, luxury, and exclusive VIP benefits.
You’ll enjoy the attentive service of a personal Butler, ensuring every aspect of your holiday is tailored to your preferences. The VIP experience begins with priority check in and boarding, followed by a welcome reception on board where you can toast the start of your holiday.
Suites also feature spacious accommodations, including a private balcony, lounge area, and indulgent touches such as champagne and chocolates. With exclusive benefits and unparalleled service, staying in a suite is more than just accommodation, it’s an unforgettable experience.
5. Is there a charge to use the pool?
On Azura and Ventura, the Oasis Pool and Endless Pool are complimentary, but other facilities within The Retreat are chargeable. On Arcadia, the hydro pool is part of the Thermal Suite, which incurs an additional cost. Similarly, on Britannia, the hydro pool and jacuzzis within The Retreat require a fee. Full details and pricing are available on board at the Spa Reception.
6. Can I have a fan in my cabin?
All cabins are equipped with air conditioning, which can be adjusted to suit your comfort. If you still wish to bring a personal fan, you must declare it during boarding so it can undergo essential electrical testing for safety compliance.
7. How high are the balcony railings?
The balcony railings on P&O ships are approximately 110 cm high, ensuring safety while still providing stunning views of the ocean.
8. What do accessible cabins look like?
Accessible cabins feature wide doorways (minimum 80 cm) for ease of access and sufficient floor space for wheelchair manoeuvrability.
Bathrooms are designed as wet rooms with grab rails, and a pull down or fixed shower seat. Accessible balcony cabins include ramped access to the balcony. On Arcadia, however, space in the accessible cabins and wet rooms is limited, particularly around the bed.
Balcony doors in these cabins are heavy and may require assistance from a travelling companion, especially during adverse weather conditions.
9. Can I visit the bridge?
Yes, P&O offers behind-the-scenes ship tours where you can explore the heart of the ship and discover what happens behind the scenes. These fascinating tours include visits to areas like the bridge, galley, and other operational spaces, providing a unique insight into how the ship runs smoothly.
10. Can you smoke on a cruise ship?
Smoking is only permitted in designated areas of the open deck. It is prohibited in cabins, on balconies, and in public spaces. E-cigarettes are also restricted to designated smoking areas. All smoking materials must be fully extinguished and disposed of in provided receptacles to ensure safety. Throwing cigarette ends overboard is strictly prohibited, as it poses a fire hazard.
11. What activities are available during sea days?
P&O ships offer a variety of activities to keep you entertained during sea days. Depending on your ship, you can enjoy features like mini-golf, swim-up bars, high ropes courses, virtual game shows, alfresco spa terraces, or immersive experiences like submarine simulations. Fleet wide activities include swimming pools, whirlpool spas, deck games, quizzes, live entertainment, and fitness facilities.
For relaxation, you can visit the Oasis Spa, try your luck at the casino, or indulge in retail therapy. Family-friendly P&O ships also feature The Reef children’s club and night nurseries, with engaging activities for kids of all ages.
12. What type of plug sockets are used onboard?
All P&O ships have standard UK three-pin plug sockets, typically located near the dresser table, TV, and bed. On Arvia and Iona, USB ports are also available by the lower beds. Bathrooms on most ships include shaver points, but on Arvia and Iona, these are limited to Suites. Shaving adaptors are available on request from your cabin steward.
